Dr Alison Price - Participant
LSHTM (Associate Professor)
I trained in veterinary medicine in Australia and worked in clinical practice at the Royal Veterinary College, London, before completing a DPhil in Cancer Epidemiology at the University of Oxford. Since 2012, I have led epidemiological research in Malawi with the Malawi Epidemiology and Intervention Research Unit (MEIRU), where I focus on the growing burden of long-term non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly cardiovascular disease (CVD), in low-income settings with high HIV prevalence. Through successive Wellcome fellowships, I have established and expanded one of the first population-based stroke and cardiovascular surveillance platforms in sub-Saharan Africa. I lead a programme of community-based, longitudinal research in both rural and urban Malawi, combining detailed phenotyping with investigation of modifiable risk factors to inform prevention and policy. I collaborate across African research consortia including the ALPHA network and the Africa Non-communicable Diseases Longitudinal Data Alliance (ANDLA), and co-lead the LSHTM CGCC Multimorbidity Special Interest Group. I am committed to capacity building through mentorship of early-career researchers, equitable partnership with local institutions, and translation of research into health system impacts in low-income Settings in Africa.
