Indigenous Innovation with African Tools and Data

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how the African knowledge base integrated with contemporary technologies can drive context-specific solutions.
  • Gain hands-on experience using locally-developed tools, and datasets to analyze and solve problems relevant to African communities and environments.
  • Effectively interpret and communicate your findings during team presentations

Datathon stream

Tool-a-thon stream

Presented by Mbarara University Data Science Research Hub (MUDSReH) the datathon is aimed at identifying and addressing bias in medical imaging AI. This is part of the bigger mission to advance equitable and ethical health technologies across the African continent.

Curated datasets include MODRIA and AVEMap, focused on mitigating diagnostic bias. The datasets contain rich clinical and metadata collected during routine medical imaging procedures from patients in Uganda.

The human mobility tool was developed by the INFORM-Africa and tested on publicly available datasets

The land surface temperature (LST) tool was developed by the HE2AT Centre and IBM Research Africa and tested on publicly available datasets
