DS-I Africa Code of Conduct


At the DS-I Africa, we celebrate the spirit of Ubuntu (familyhood) and foster a welcoming environment for all. We believe in the power of diversity and inclusion to drive innovation in African machine learning. This Code of Conduct outlines the expected behavior for all attendees, speakers, organizers, and volunteers at the DS-I Africa Consortium Meeting, Steering Committee Meetings, Working Group Meetings, and other DS-I Africa consortium activities. We are committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and safe environment for everyone.

Respectful Behavior

  • Inclusivity: Treat everyone with respect, regardless of their gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, nationality, age, religion, disability, or any other characteristic. Embrace diversity and value the contributions of others.
  • Professionalism: Conduct yourself in a professional manner, avoiding harassment, discrimination, or bullying.
  • Communication: Be mindful of your language and avoid offensive or disrespectful comments.
  • Collaboration: Foster a collaborative and supportive atmosphere, encouraging open dialogue and respectful debate.
  • Be respectful: Be mindful of your words and actions, and avoid discriminatory or harassing behavior.
  • Be supportive: Foster a collaborative environment where everyone feels comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas.

Harassment Policy

Definition: Harassment includes any behavior that creates a hostile, intimidating, or offensive environment, such as:

  • Physical or verbal abuse
  • Intimidation or threats
  • Unwanted sexual attention
  • Discrimination or prejudice

Reporting Concerns:

We encourage you to report any concerns or incidents to us. You can submit an anonymous report online or speak to the coordinating center staff. Harassment or discrimination concerns contributing to an unsafe or hostile work environment at the recipient institution of an NIH grant can also be reported to NIH: https://public.era.nih.gov/shape/public/index.era

Consequences:

If a participant violates this code, the organizers will take appropriate action, including removal from the consortium meeting.

By participating in the DS-I Africa consortium, you agree to abide by this Code of Conduct.
