DS-CHANGE: Data Science for Child Health Now in Ghana (Masters Student)

Pomaa Appiah is a master's student in the Data Science for Child Health Now in Ghana (DS-CHANGE) program at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where she is specializing in the application of machine learning and computer vision to health-related problems. Her current research project, "Automatic Preoperative Severity Assessment of Cleft Palate," explores the use of convolutional neural networks to predict anatomical landmarks and assess the severity of cleft palate in 2D medical images. By integrating pre-trained deep learning models with clinical metrics, her work aims to support more accurate, efficient surgical planning and improve outcomes for children with craniofacial conditions. Her broader research interests include Bayesian networks and optimization techniques for medical imaging, with the goal of enhancing diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning. Pomaa is passionate about using AI to address health disparities, especially in low-resource settings. She is now preparing for a career in data science, where she hopes to continue building impactful, ethical, and inclusive solutions.
