Dr Richard Kimera - Participant

Dr. Kimera's academic journey includes a PhD in Engineering with a thesis focused on Natural Language Processing (NLP) for Low Resource African languages from Handong Global University, South Korea. He also holds a Master's in Techno-entrepreneurship Competence based on Electrical Engineering and ICT convergence, and a Bachelor of Information Technology with First Class Honours from MUST. He is currently pursuing a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Makerere University, focusing on "Maternal Understanding through Language-Aware Multimodal AI in Uganda (MULAMU)". Richard Kimera is an expert in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cloud Computing. He is a key consultant for the MUST Data Science Research Hub, where he contributes his knowledge to advance various initiatives, including organizing the 2nd AI in Health Symposium. His professional experience spans roles, including Project Manager for "Dialogues of Delivery: Fine-Tuning Large Language Models for Prenatal and Perinatal Care in East African Languages," where he oversees model building, project coordination, budget management, and staff supervision. He also serves as a Machine Learning and Data Engineer for the "Creation of a Multilingual Multimodal Parallel Dataset for Runyankore-Rukiga and Luganda for Large Language Modelling".
