African Population and Health Research Center (Program Manager - Data Science Without Borders)
Miranda Barasa is a Program Manager at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), where she manages the Data Science Without Borders (DSWB) initiative. She oversees multi-country collaborations aimed at strengthening data systems, fostering ethical data governance, and applying AI/ML tools to improve public health research and decision-making across Africa. At APHRC, Miranda provides strategic leadership across a diverse portfolio that includes coordinating stakeholder engagement, shaping policy dialogues, and building capacity in data science through hackathons, trainings, and mentorship for early-career researchers. She has played a key role in operationalizing a cross-border Joint Data Sharing Agreement, co-developing no-code AI platforms, and supporting the integration of Health Information Exchange (HIE) systems to improve data interoperability and use. Prior to APHRC, Miranda worked with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Kenya, where she provided technical oversight for HIV programs, digital health scale-up, and research regulation. She holds a Master's in Public Health from Brunel University London and a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health from Kenyatta University.
