  • Dr Janet Midega - Participant

    Wellcome Trust (Research Lead)

Janet Midega is Research Lead for Drug Resistant Infections at Wellcome, where she is providing scientific leadership, program development and management support to the Infectious disease program on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). At Wellcome, Janet leads the global burden of AMR work since 2018, working closely with IHME, University of Oxford and other funders; BMGF and UK Department of Health. Within the AMR portfolio, Janet leads Wellcome's work on AMR surveillance and epidemiology to inform evidence-based interventions, working closely with ministries of health and other partners in low and middle countries especially in Africa and Asia. Janet also leads research activities at the intersection of science and policy. Examples are the SB27 program which aims at evaluating how legislative changes banning antibiotic use in animal meat production can reduce the potential transfer of resistant pathogens between animals and humans; and SEDRILIMS, a surveillance program on the development of a comprehensive data capture system for patient-centred AMR surveillance. In line with the Wellcome's interest in accelerating the development of new antibiotics, Janet worked closely with CARB-x based at Boston University, USA in 2018/19, as part of Wellcome's role as an accelerator and support for companies joining CARBx.
