Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (Associate professor of Medical Microbiology)
I am an associate professor in the department of Medical Microbiology, in the College of Medical Sciences; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. I have a medical degree and also hold a position as an honorary consultant Medical Microbiologist with the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, in Kaduna State, Nigeria. My current research interests are Neisseria meningitidis and antimicrobial resistance in enterobacteriaceae, because of the burden of disease caused by these pathogens in Nigeria. I now used Next Generation sequencing to help unravel the mechanisms behind antimicrobial resistance. I have an immense passion for bioinformatics, especially as it relates to bacterial genomics. Because of this passion and interest, I have attended the Wellcome Genome Campus Advanced Course: Next Generation sequencing, in March 2016. I have also attended the Applied Bioinformatics Course organized by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in April 2017, and the Bioinformatics Training Workshop organized by the African Center of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), Osun State, Nigeria in April 2018. I presently coordinate the laboratory component of the Wellcome Trust Depression Genetics in Africa (DepGenAfrica) project in Nigeria. I have a postgraduate certificate in clinical bioinformatics from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
