    Mark is Deputy CEO of UK Biobank. A physicist by background, Mark undertook a MSc and PhD at the University of Birmingham before joining IBM in 1997 where he spent the best part of 20 years in a variety of technical, consulting and strategy roles across healthcare and life sciences. As a Teaching Fellow at the University of Manchester Business School, Mark taught business and IT architecture and maintains domain expertise in health informatics and big data. Mark is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and joined UK Biobank in 2016 as its Chief Information Officer before taking on more operational roles before becoming Deputy CEO in 2020. He has been closely associated with the large-scale programmes to add genotyping, exome and whole genome sequencing data to the UK Biobank resource, and has led implementation of UK Biobank’s new cloud-based Research Analysis Platform that provides additional ways for the international research community to engage with this growing petabyte-scale repository of richly curated health data.
