Mr Joel Sabiti - Travel Awardee
Computational Omics and Biomedical Informatics Program (COBIP)
I am a Doctoral Researcher in Computational Health Informatics at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where I also serve as a Research Tutor. My work sits at the cutting edge of deep learning and medical diagnostics, with a specific focus on developing robust, AI-driven solutions tailored for low-resource healthcare settings. I hold a Master of Science in Health Informatics and a Bachelor's in Computer Engineering from Makerere University, as well as a Post-Graduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation. My research portfolio is defined by the application of advanced neural architectures to critical health challenges. I have spearheaded projects ranging from diagnosing latent tuberculosis and malaria to implementing attention-aware transformers for medical image segmentation. Currently, my work focuses on the optimization of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for paired image translation and virtual staining. I am particularly driven by the potential of hyperspectral imaging to transcend traditional diagnostic limits, and I am actively working to integrate these sophisticated technologies into accessible mobile applications. My professional background includes a tenure as an Assistant Researcher with UNICEF Uganda, where I gained vital insights into the intersection of data science and public health infrastructure. By combining high-performance computing-utilizing resources like the ILIFU cluster-with a deep understanding of local clinical needs, I aim to bridge the gap between backend research and user-facing medical tools. I am committed to fostering a collaborative African research ecosystem that prioritizes sustainable innovation and equitable healthcare access across the continent.
