Leveraging Data Science Applications to Improve Children's Environmental Health in Sub-Saharan Africa (PhD Student)

I am a PhD candidate at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, pursuing doctoral research in Epidemiology, with a specialization in Environmental Epidemiology. My research focuses on understanding how exposure risk profiles explain the spatial variability of the relationship between fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and child undernutrition. Additionally, I investigate the combined effects of multiple environmental exposures on child undernutrition outcomes across Sub-Saharan Africa. My work, under the DS-I Africa DICE project, leverages advanced data science tools to integrate air pollution exposure data (i.e., satellite-derived PM₂.₅ concentrations) with multiple waves of Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data on child health outcomes, including undernutrition (i.e., stunting, wasting, underweight and anemia) and acute respiratory infections. My research aims to generate robust evidence on the effect of environmental exposures on child health, and inform targeted public health interventions and policies to reduce the burden of undernutrition in Sub-Saharan Africa.
