Dr Jerry Emmanuel - Travel Awardee
Genome-wide characterization of complex variants and their phenotypic effects in African populations
Dr. Jerry Emmanuel is an early-career researcher who recently completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Covenant University, where he emerged as the best graduating doctoral student in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. He also holds both a Master's and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, graduating with distinction and first-class honors, respectively. His research interests include machine learning, evolutionary algorithm optimization, artificial intelligence, big data, and bioinformatics. Dr. Emmanuel's doctoral studies were funded by the World Bank through the Covenant Applied Informatics and Communication African Centre of Excellence (CApIC-ACE), where he served as a Research Assistant and the pioneer Chairman of the CApIC-ACE Students' Committee. His research was also partially supported by the Covenant University Bioinformatics Research (CUBRe) through the Genome-wide characterization of complex variants and their phenotypic effects in African populations (GCAP) grant, during which he served as a Research Associate. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow with CUBRe under the NIH-funded DS-I Africa GCAP Project. He has authored over 16 scientific publications in high-impact journals and has presented his work at both local and international conferences. In addition, he serves as a reviewer for the Nigerian Journal of Biotechnology. He is a Member of the African Society of Human Genetics (AfSHG), the Nigerian Bioinformatics and Genomics Network (NBGN), and a Graduate Member of the Computer Professionals (Registration Council) of Nigeria (CPN). Dr. Emmanuel's long-term career goal is to become a leading expert in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics.
