INnovative data Science to Impact the TB Epidemic (INSITE)
I am a health data scientist and PhD candidate based at the University of Cape Town, seconded to the Department of Health in the Provincial Government of the Western Cape (PGWC). I have a background in molecular and computational biology with strong epidemiological and data analysis skills in the public sector. My work involves developing solutions to integrate, harmonize, analyse, and visualise routine public health data at scale. These solutions are used to support health systems strengthening through the development of data-driven tools that are used by health care providers to deliver care and identify patients in need of particular interventions, as well as for epidemiological analyses. With more than 5 years' experience in this public sector setting, I have been involved in both the development of de-novo tools as well as further refinement and scaling up of existing tools. This development and refinement of tools is done within the government, alongside collaborating PGWC clinicians, thus allowing the data science work synergistically to ask and address public health questions in one consolidated environment (in near real-time).
