Research Training in Data Science for Health in Rwanda

Brigitte Umutoni is a PhD student in Public Health at the University of Rwanda, specializing in infectious disease epidemiology and data-driven modeling. Her research focuses on climate-informed spatial modeling to predict the spread of Rift Valley fever in Rwanda, examining the interactions between mosquito vectors, livestock, and human populations to inform effective intervention strategies. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Rwanda and a Master's in Statistics and Data Science (Quantitative Epidemiology) from Hasselt University, Belgium. Brigitte is passionate about leveraging data science to strengthen health systems and support evidence-based decision-making in low-resource settings. She is also an advocate for women in STEM, actively contributing to mentorship initiatives through the Rwanda Association of Women In Science and Engineering(RAWISE) to empower young girls in STEM. Additionally, she is an innovator in maternal health and the founder of Famora Care, a platform addressing maternal well-being, including postpartum depression, through AI-driven solutions. Today, she is presenting findings from one of the studies conducted as part of her ongoing PhD research.
