Mr Imonikhe Kio - Participant
Combatting AntiMicrobial Resistance in Africa Using Data Science (Research Associate)
Imonikhe Kennedy Kio is a Research Associate at the Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH), Redeemer's University, Nigeria, where he works at the intersection of molecular diagnostics, genomic surveillance, and public health. He holds a Master's degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Lagos and a Bachelor's degree in Genetics and Biotechnology from the University of Calabar. His research focuses on applying next-generation sequencing and data-driven approaches to understand pathogen diversity, transmission dynamics, and antimicrobial resistance. He is actively involved in multinational infectious disease surveillance initiatives and has contributed to genomic studies of emerging pathogens, including mpox and SARS-CoV-2, with work submitted to leading journals. Currently, he is working on whole-genome sequencing of bacterial isolates under the CAMRA project, investigating genomic determinants and patterns of antimicrobial resistance. His interests include integrating genomics with health data science to strengthen disease surveillance and outbreak response. Imonikhe is passionate about advancing research capacity and laboratory quality systems in Africa, contributing to ISO 17025-aligned frameworks and training of laboratory personnel to support data-driven public health strategies.
