Advancing Public Health Research in Eastern Africa through Data Science Training (Co-PI)
Belay Simane is a Professor of Environment and Development Studies in the college of Development Studies of AAU. I bring more than 30 years of varied experience in teaching, agricultural research, and rural development in Ethiopia, India, Syria, Kenya, Mozambique, and the U.S.A. to this project. Beyond the expertise I acquired through earning my degrees at top institutions in three countries, I have also benefited from additional specialized training in dry-land agronomy, climate change, natural resources management, crop ecology, agro-meteorology, genetic resource conservation, environmental management systems, and crop growth models. These areas of expertise will benefit our proposed capacity-building project in public health data science within our focus on environmental health. My extensive leadership experience will also make me a strong partner in helping to design and lead our training programs, as well as develop research partnerships and practicums with our stakeholder collaborators. I have held leadership positions in numerous institutions, including head of the Center for Environment and Development Studies, Director of Research at Haramaya University, Research Advisor of the Sida Rural Development program, and Senior Agronomist of EIAR and the Ethiopian Input Authority. Currently I am working as a professor in the Center for Environment
