  • Dr Ronald Galiwango - Speaker

Open Data Science Platform (eLwazi Uganda Node Bioinformatician/Data Scientist)

Ronald Galiwango (PhD) is the Deputy Director and a resident bioinformatics/data scientist at the African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data Intensive Sciences (ACE) at the Infectious Diseases Institute, Makerere University. His interest lies in using quantitative methodologies (data science, mathematical modeling, bioinformatics and advanced statistical methodologies) to answer epidemiology research questions as well as bio-medical and public health problems, with a focus on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). This involves innovative in-silico approaches for designing antimicrobial drug combination therapies, employing bioinformatics techniques to identify One Health AMR transmission pathways, and utilizing data science methodologies to guide antimicrobial stewardship initiatives. I also have a strong passion for training and mentorship having benefited from both. He believes in building a critical mass of quantitative scientists so as to redress the capacity gap and to perform and complete projects with immediate relevance to national and regional health issues. He is on the training management committee and is a mentor on an NIH funded data science training programme under the DSI-Africa Initiative, MakDARTA (Makerere University Data Science Research Training to Strengthen Evidence-Based Health Innovation, Intervention and Policy. He is a data scientist on the Uganda node of the eLwazi ODSP project under DS-I Africa.
