Eneza Data Science: Enhancing Data Science Capability and Tools for Health in East Africa (Contact-PI)
Dr Daniel Masiga is an infectious diseases biologist, and head of Global Health Thematic Research Program at icipe. His research focuses on the biology of pathogens and vectors, using genomics and bioinformatics; utilizing these tools to discover emerging infectious disease threats and developing and implementing control measures, with a focus on those transmitted by ticks, mosquitoes, and sand flies. Masiga currently leads the ENEZA Data Science DS-I Africa project, building on a bioinformatics postgraduate training program in East Africa that enabled establishment of MSc Bioinformatics programs at two universities (Makerere in Uganda, and Pwani in Kenya). Graduates from these programs continue to excel in training and research programs in many countries, but especially strengthening capacity in their home institutions. He was President of the African Society for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (ASBCB) and has pro-activity developed and improved his mentorship and supervisory skills through training, participation as a mentor with the African Women in Agricultural Development (AWARD) and the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) mentorship programs. His is a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences.
