    Heidi Sofia is the Deputy Director of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). At NCBI she supports efforts to provide public access to biomedical and genomic information resources for a global community, building on data standards and robust engineering as a foundation for interoperability. Previously at the National Human Genome Research Institute she managed an informatics portfolio focused on data sharing with security and privacy, including cryptographic and other methods to balance risk, benefit and data sovereignty in sharing genomics and health data. Dr. Sofia was originally trained in biochemistry, genomics, and bioinformatics, and worked in information sciences at the Department of Energy before joining NIH.
