Advancing discovery for developmental disorders - expanded analysis of the DDD-Africa resource (Contact-PI)
Zane Lombard obtained her PhD from Wits in 2008, specialising in Human Genetics and Bioinformatics. Her PhD research focused on bioinformatics approaches to disease-gene discovery. Since then, she has been affiliated with Wits in different roles - she was a Senior Lecturer in Bioinformatics in the School of Molecular & Cell Biology (2012-2015), before re-joining the Division of Human Genetics (2015-2023) where she worked as a Principal medical scientist until recently. She is now appointed as a Clinical Research professor in the Wits School of Clinical Medicine. Prof Lombard leads a research group that investigates the genetic causes of paediatric developmental disorders and is the principal investigator of an NIH-funded project called Deciphering Developmental Disorders in Africa, which was started in 2017. Prof Lombard is passionate about promoting health science and research in Africa, and therefore participate in several academic service domains at university, national and international level. She is a long-standing member of the SA Society for Human Genetics, having served as Secretary, Treasurer and President over the years. She is also the current Chair of the steering committee of the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) Consortium.
