Noni Mumba has been heading community and public engagement for 10 years, based at the KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP), a large and busy biomedical research centre in Kenya. Her main role involves the development of best practice approaches for meaningfully, and ethically engaging communities and stakeholders that host and volunteer in research studies. She also coordinates the development of approaches for engaging a diverse range of public, as well as approaches for engaging local and national policy makers. As an expert of Community Engagement (CE), Noni supports the strengthening of KWTRP engagement policies and practice through institutional capacity building initiatives, development and/or adapting engagement policies, and protocol review with a specific focus on CE. At the global level, she has shared her expertise through webinars, authorship of a CE manuscript and CE modules in Community Engagement and Involvement courses. She has a keen interest in the ethics of engagement, how researchers can be inspired to do people-centred research through the insights they gather from research stakeholders and communities, and how to evaluate engagement. She is a member of the Global Health and Bioethics Network and has been part of NIHR Funding Committees, evaluating grant applications focusing on CE.
