    Advancing Public Health Research in Eastern Africa through Data Science Training (APHREA-DST) (Administrator)

    Carol Shreffler, Ph.D. is a Program Officer in the Exposure, Response and Technology Branch of the Division of Research and Training at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. She administers the Institutional Training Grants supported by NIEHS, and she is the Division coordinator for the Career Development grants and the K99/R00 Pathways to Independence Grants. She is credited with developing and managing the Outstanding New Environmental Scientist Program, a R01 research grant aimed at outstanding new Early Stage Investigators in the Environmental Health Sciences. Dr. Shreffler's scientific portfolio includes grants in liver, renal and digestive systems Toxicology. Dr. Shreffler serves on numerous trans-NIH and NIEHS Committees and is the NIEHS representative to the NIH Training Advisory Committee. Current committees and working groups include: the NIH Office of Data Science Strategy Training Subcommitte to address the workforce gap in data governance, NIH Scientific Data Council (SDC) Data Science Workforce Working Group, the High Risk - High Reward Common Fund, STrengthening Research Opportunities for NIH Grants (STRONG): Structured Institutional Needs Assessment and Action Plan Development for Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) Committee, as well as trans NIH committees to oversee diversity focused career development awards and supplements to promote continuity and retention for women at junior science levels. Dr. Shreffler served on the Training Subcommittee of the Big Data to Knowledge program, and was the Program Officer for the Training Coordination Committee and the K Career Development Awards. Dr. Shreffler received the Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Texas Tech University. Following experience as an aerospace engineer at Johnson Spacecraft Center, she returned to graduate school and received a Ph.D. in genetics from Oregon State University. She spent time in the Intramural Research Program of the NIEHS before joining the Division of Extramural Research and Training as a Scientific Review Administrator. In 1999, she assumed her current position as Director of the Training and Career Development Programs.
