    Deshen Moodley is the SARChI Chair in Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cape Town (UCT), and the co-director and co-founder of South Africa’s national Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR). He is currently based at the Paris Institute for Advanced Study as one of 14 long term international fellows (2023/2024) undertaking a research project in collaboration with the Sorbonne Centre for Artificial Intelligence on augmented AI systems for scientific knowledge discovery. His broad research focus is on designing human centred AI systems, i.e. systems which work interactively and coperatively with human users. He specifically explores adaptation and cognition mechanisms in AI systems for scientific knowledge discovery and interactive decision making. He has explored AI systems across diverse domains, including the health, energy, finance and earth observation domains. He has also spent some time as a visiting researcher at several leading interdisciplinary research groups, including the Clinical Decision-Making Group, CSAIL, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Machine Vision Unit, University of Edinburgh, and the Institute for Geoinformatics, University of Muenster.
