    Jeffrey Shaffer, Ph.D., Dr. Shaffer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Data Science (BDS) at Tulane University's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM). His expertise focuses on data science; statistical and computer programming; large-scale data capture, management, and harmonization; survey design and analysis; geographic information systems (GIS); and spatial data science. Dr. Shaffer has considerable experience in tropical diseases, particularly in clinical epidemiology and laboratory diagnostics for West African febrile illnesses (including malaria, Lassa fever, and Ebola virus disease). He has extensive international collaborations and as a council member for the NIH Africa Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics. Dr. Shaffer also serves on the steering committee for the NIH's Serological Sciences Network, a large coordinated effort in the US to study the immune response to COVID-19. He is a PI for several NIH Fogarty programs for providing data science training for Malian researchers. Dr. Shaffer has participated in over 25 NIH research projects and has over 60 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Shaffer directs the Tulane SPHTM Global Research Data Center (GRDC), which specializes in setting up and overseeing data capture and management systems for international research, and regularly teaches courses in database management and advanced molecular epidemiology methods.
