Third Meeting of the DS-I Africa Consortium
3 November - 9 November 2023

  • Dr Etienne Vos - Participant

Developing data science solutions to mitigate the health impacts of climate change in Africa: the HE2AT Center (HEAT) (Research Manager)

Etienne Vos is a Research Manager for the Climate and Sustainability team at IBM Research in South Africa. Coming from a background in Physics and applied mathematics, he transitioned to the field of machine learning when he joined IBM in 2018. During his time as a research scientist he worked on a number of machine-learning focussed projects ranging from radio-frequency interference (RFI) mitigation for the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), pathology report coding for the National Cancer Registry in South Africa, and leveraging machine learning for post-processing of physics-based sub-seasonal to seasonal forecasts. His team's involvement in the HE2AT Center research hub involves utilising machine learning to generate high-resolution heat-hazard maps for cities in Africa, and developing approaches to quantify socio-economic vulnerability in relation to extreme heat exposure.
