Dr Halfan Ngowo - Participant
Ifakara Health Institute (Research Scientist)
Dr. Halfan Said Ngowo is a Research Scientist at Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), Tanzania, with a PhD in Population & Ecosystem Health from the University of Glasgow. He specializes in quantitative ecology and disease vector transmission, with a strong focus on Bayesian methods for malaria vector modeling. Currently, Dr. Ngowo is leading a consortium focused on modeling the impact of extreme weather events on malaria transmission in Tanzania and Mozambique. His mentorship initiatives and contributions to scientific knowledge, including over 65 publications, have earned him recognition as one of the most cited young scientists at the institute. Since 2014, he has also been coordinating a research group at IHI, collaborating with postdoctoral scientists, PhD and MSc students, and technicians. Additionally, he is coordinating and teaching an MSc program (Advanced Quantitative Analysis module) at Ifakara Health Institute, jointly with the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology. He also supports efforts to strengthen mathematical modeling capacities across African institutions and integrates AI with infrared spectroscopy to enhance malaria intervention outcomes.
